What a GP referral needs

A GP referral lets you claim any available Medicare rebate and gives your surgeon your full clinical picture from the first appointment. A useful referral usually includes the reason for referral (your symptoms or an abnormal imaging result), relevant medical history and current medications, and copies of any recent imaging or pathology, if available. A standard GP referral to a specialist is valid for 12 months, while a specialist-to-specialist referral is valid for 3 months.

Can you refer yourself?

Yes. You’re welcome to book without a GP referral if you’d prefer to be seen sooner or don’t have a regular GP. Keep in mind that, without a valid referral, you generally can’t claim a Medicare rebate on your specialist consultation, so many patients choose to organise one first. If you have symptoms, a screening service like BreastScreen NSW is not the right pathway.
