Understanding the cause helps clarify which treatment options may suit you. Breast asymmetry can develop for several reasons:

• Natural developmental differences (genetics). The most common cause. The two breasts often develop at slightly different rates during puberty, and small differences in size or shape simply persist into adulthood.
• Hormonal changes. Fluctuating hormone levels (including during puberty, the menstrual cycle and menopause) can affect each breast differently over time.
• Weight fluctuations. Because breasts contain a variable amount of fatty tissue, gaining or losing weight can cause one breast to change more than the other.
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding. These changes don’t always reverse symmetrically, and one breast may settle at a different size or position afterwards.
• Previous surgery or trauma. Earlier breast surgery, injury or scarring can alter the shape, volume or position of one side.
• Congenital conditions. Developmental conditions such as tuberous breast deformity or differences in chest wall anatomy can create a marked imbalance from the outset.

Because more than one of these factors can be at play, Dr Yunaev designs each surgical plan around the specific combination of volume and position differences present in your breasts.

The right approach depends on the type and degree of asymmetry, your breast characteristics and your desired outcome. Dr Yunaev may recommend one technique or a combination of the following:

• Increasing volume on the smaller side. This can be achieved with an implant or, for suitable patients, with fat transfer breast augmentation, in which fat is harvested from areas such as the thighs, abdomen, or buttocks and grafted into the smaller breast.
• Reducing volume on the larger side. If one breast is significantly larger and heavier, a reduction can bring it into proportion. This can be performed by excision or, in selected cases, breast liposuction reduction to contour size and shape.
• Lifting a lower breast. Where one breast sits lower or sags more than the other, a breast lift without implants can raise it and rebalance nipple height. For more pronounced cases, a breast reduction and lift may be combined to correct both size and droop at once.
• Combining procedures. Severe asymmetry often involves both volume and shape differences, so Dr Yunaev may combine techniques. For example, an implant on one side with a lift on the other. When two procedures are needed, they are generally performed together to reduce overall recovery time.

Several incision patterns may be used depending on your case, including a circular (periareolar) incision, a vertical scar or an anchor pattern. At Breast & Body Clinic, we aim to minimise scarring, but the choice of technique is primarily dictated by your own anatomy and the amount of tissue that needs to be removed, lifted or added to achieve an even result.

Before deciding on breast asymmetry correction surgery, keep these points in mind:

• If breast implants are used, they are not guaranteed to last a lifetime and may need replacing in the future.
• Smokers face an increased risk of complications. Quitting before surgery is strongly advised.
• We generally recommend waiting until breast development, childbirth and breastfeeding have finished before undergoing surgery.
• Your ability to breastfeed afterwards may be affected. Tell your surgeon if you plan to breastfeed in future.
• Pregnancy, and significant weight loss or gain, can alter the results of previous asymmetry surgery.
• Breast and nipple piercings can introduce infection.

You may be a good candidate if you are physically healthy, have realistic expectations, have fully developed breasts, and the difference between them is considerable.

Unlike most cosmetic breast procedures, asymmetry correction is one of the few that can attract a Medicare rebate, provided strict clinical criteria are met. The relevant Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) item, 45060, covers single-stage correction of a developmental breast abnormality. Eligibility generally requires a documented volume difference between the breasts of at least 20% in normally shaped breasts (or 10% in tubular breasts or breasts with abnormally high inframammary folds), supported by photographic and/or diagnostic imaging evidence recorded in your notes.

• A GP referral is required to see a specialist and to pursue any Medicare pathway.
• Purely cosmetic asymmetry (differences below the documented volume thresholds, or breasts that are simply smaller than average without deformity) is not covered.
• Qualifying for an MBS item is also what allows private health funds to contribute to hospital and anaesthetic costs, which can meaningfully reduce your out-of-pocket expense.
• The final decision on eligibility rests with Medicare, and criteria are updated periodically.

Every recovery is individual and depends on the technique used, whether procedures were combined, and how well your body heals. The timeline below is a general guide to what most patients can expect.

• First few days. Your breasts will feel swollen, sore and bruised. Soreness is usually most noticeable during the first two to three days, and prescribed pain relief and cold packs help manage it. You’ll wear a light support dressing and a surgical support bra, and you’ll need someone with you for the first 24 hours.
• Week 1. Swelling and tenderness are still present but easing. Avoid lifting, stretching and any activity that puts pressure on the breasts. Many patients with non-physical jobs feel ready to return to light desk work toward the end of this week.
• Weeks 2–3. Bruising fades, and comfort improves steadily. Light activity, such as gentle walking, can usually resume around the three-week mark, following Dr Yunaev’s guidance. Continue wearing your support bra as directed.
• Weeks 4–6. Most patients can gradually return to more strenuous activity and exercise by around six weeks after clearance. Residual swelling continues to settle.
• 3–6 months and beyond. Swelling fully subsides, and the breasts settle into their final shape. Complete results (particularly the softening and fading of scars) can take from six months up to a year.

Throughout your recovery, follow-up appointments allow the team to monitor healing, wound care, volume and symmetry, and to address any concerns promptly.

Patients who have undergone breast reconstruction or radiation therapy may notice that one breast differs in shape, size or position from the other. This is far more common when only one breast was reconstructed, or when radiation was applied to one side only.

We strongly recommend waiting several months after a reconstruction before assessing symmetry, as this allows the tissues to heal and any asymmetry to stabilise. Once healing has settled, you’ll have a clearer picture of whether a correction procedure would help restore balance.

Correction may involve adjusting the natural breast with an implant, a lift or a reduction, or grafting fat into relevant areas of the smaller breast to improve symmetry and contour.

Misconceptions about uneven breasts are widespread. Here are the ones we hear most often, corrected.

Myth 1: Asymmetrical breasts aren’t normal

They are entirely normal. The breasts commonly develop at slightly different rates during puberty, and ageing, pregnancy and weight change can add further variation. Around the majority of women have some degree of asymmetry. It only becomes a candidate for surgery when the difference is significant or affecting you physically or emotionally.

Myth 2: Creams, supplements or exercises can even out your breasts

No topical cream, oral supplement or exercise can meaningfully change breast size or shape. Surgery is the only reliable way to correct genuine asymmetry.

Myth 3: Not wearing a bra causes asymmetry

Skin and ligament laxity develop with age regardless of bra habits. Wearing or not wearing a bra does not meaningfully cause or prevent breast asymmetry.

Myth 4: Implants are the only option

Not so. Depending on your anatomy, asymmetry can be corrected with a lift, a reduction, fat grafting, or a combination of these, many of which involve no implant at all.

Myth 5: Surgery leaves no visible scarring

Incisions are placed as discreetly as possible within natural creases, and scars fade considerably over time, but they never disappear entirely. Realistic expectations about scarring are part of good planning.

Myth 6: Surgery delivers perfectly identical breasts

No two breasts are ever perfectly identical, not even naturally. The realistic goal is balanced, well-proportioned breasts with minimal noticeable difference, not mirror-image symmetry.
